Information Vital To Deep Brook's Quality

To the Editor:

Candlewood Valley Trout Unlimited (CVTU) contacted the Newtown Conservation Commission (CC) last year asking to upgrade the Deep Brook Open Space kiosk with educational materials and a Plexiglas covering which would preserve materials placed there.  The CC (with a town official present) approved the request.  CVTU along with two members of the Conservation Commission installed upgrades and added educational materials to the kiosk on 7/21/14.  CVTU donated over $120 worth of materials.  This work was performed largely in response to unsolved discharges which occurred on at least two recent occasions affecting Deep Brook’s water quality and wildlife.

At some point in the past few months, CC-approved materials, including DEEP’s contact numbers and local emergency contact info, were removed and replaced with materials unrelated to conservation.

Until unsolved discharges to Deep Brook cease, friends of Deep Brook (e.g., walkers, runners and families) need to have emergency reporting numbers available so that when they see something, they can say something 7 days a week, 24 hours a day.  I hope friends of Deep Brook will join me in requesting all educational materials and emergency numbers be returned.

Respectfully,

Ann Astarita

Former Chair of the Newtown Conservation Commission
