For the fourth consecutive time, the Newtown Navigators (Girls U12) finished second at a soccer tournament – this time in Danbury. The ‘Gators tied Bridgeport (1-1) and defeated New Fairfield (2-0), but lost to the host team (2-1) in the tournament opener.

In the loss to Danbury, the ‘Gators tied the score at 1-1 on a sideline pass from Julie Landin to Jackie Schulz. The tie held up until the final minute when Danbury pushed across the game winner. Eva Cerreta and Christie Attanasio led the defense while Rachel Maley played well in the midfield.

In the draw with Bridgeport, the ‘Gators once again had to come back from a 1-0 deficit and once again it Landin to Schulz. Claire Ober and Alana Bilangi played well on offense while Katie Kirrane and goalie Katie Powers played well.

In the win over New Fairfield, Harriet Morgan converted a picture-perfect pass from Schulz to score in the first minutes of play. Schulz then scored an insurance goal on a breakaway. Powers earned the shutout in goal with the defensive help of Jackie Petrasanta, Attanasio and Kirrane, the team’s MVP. Jackie Kirol and Caroline Kraich played well in the midfield.

GIRLS F

 

DEFENDERS 2, TORNADOES 0: Leah Barrett and Casey Rutter each scored a goal, lifting the Defenders to a 2-0 victory. Emma Iannini, Kelsey Karp and Celeste Cheung played outstanding games helping to preserve the shutout. The Tornadoes’s Kaitlyn Connolly, Erica Green and Randi Jackson played solid games.
