Fred Adler of Newtown graduated from Mitchell College with an Associate Degree in business administration – management. The 58th commencement ceremony was held at the college on Saturday, May 18.

Michele Tidd, a 1992 graduate of Newtown High School, will be attending the University of Georgia’s College of Veterinary Medicine. This is a four-year degree that will culminate in a DVM. Ms Tidd plans on specializing in horses while at UGA and then go on to an internship and residency in equine orthopedics.

Kristen Coates of Newtown was named to the dean’s list at Syracuse University for the 2002 spring semester. She is a freshman majoring in psychology.

Jennifer L. Presnell graduated from the Savannah College of Art and Design recently. She graduated cum laude with a Bachelor of Fine Art in interior design. Ms Presnell is the daughter of Mr and Mrs James R. Presnell, formerly of Newtown, and is a 1997 graduate of Newtown High School.

Drew University student Jennifer Beth Dorenbosch of Newtown has been named to the dean’s list for the spring semester 2002.

Several Newtown students qualified for the honor roll at Wooster School for the second semester of the 2001-2002 academic year: High Honors — seventh grade Chelsea A. Gilchrist, eighth grade Marco R. Arienzo; Honors — sixth grade Grace F. Galie, seventh grade Jordan T. Frey, eighth grade Matthew R. Courchene-Roy and Morgan B. Hopkins; tenth grade Monica M. Arienzo and Jill B. Medinger; Commendation — sixth grade Vanessa M. Courchene-Roy and Zachary J. Midurski.

Wooster School Undergraduate awards were given to Marco Arienzo, who received the middle school prize for Academic Excellence, the Middle School Foreign Language Recognition Award for French, and the Eighth Grade Physical Education Award; Matthew Courchene-Roy received the Eighth Grade Outstanding Athlete Award; Vannessa Courchene-Roy received Outstanding Citizenship for the entire year; Morgan Hopkins received the Arthur Cattermole Prize for contribution to school life and the Eighth Grade Music Recognition Award; and Jill Medinger was awarded the Honor Society Foreign Language Award for Spanish.

Kaitlin Alyssa Barry of Sandy Hook accepted membership in The National Society of Collegiate Scholars and will be honored during a campus ceremony this fall at the University of Delaware.

The following local students have attained the honor roll at Lauralton Hall Academy of Our Lady of Mercy. They are freshmen Kristen DeCasare and Kathleen Murphy, and senior M. Caitlin Socjacki.

Reid A. Warner of Newtown graduated from Dartmouth College June 9 with a degree in psychology. He is the son of Diane and Neal Warner. He has been accepted to a PhD program in clinical psychology at Western Michigan University.

Joann Bartek of Sandy Hook was named to the dean’s list at Johnson & Wales University for the spring term.

Kevin Michael Malone, son of Stephen and Maureen Malone of Newtown, received a doctor of medicine degree from Wake Forest University School of Medicine May 20. He will take his residency in internal medicine at Yale School of Medicine. Mr Malone has a bachelor of arts degree in chemistry from Wake Forest University.

Shannon E. Solheim, daughter of Mr and Mrs Peter E. Solheim of Sandy Hook, and Sarah E. McLoughlin, daughter of Mr and Mrs Peter McLoughlin of Newtown, achieved dean’s list for the spring semester at Muhlenberg College.

David Matthew Portanova, son of Elaine and Ralph Portanova of Newtown, was named to the dean’s list at Hartford Art School for the spring semester.

Matthew E. Garbarino, son of William and Carol Garbarino of Newtown, was named to the dean’s list at Colby College for the 2002 spring semester. He is a history major.

Katherine Morrissey, daughter of Tom and Julie Morrissey of Sandy Hook, a freshman creative writing major, earned dean’s list honors at Susquehanna University for the spring semester.

Shaun Cavanaugh, son of Paulette and Bill Cavanaugh of Botsford, was named to the dean’s list at Wheaton College. He is a senior majoring in studio art and art history. Mr Cavanaugh has been named co-captain of Wheaton’s 2002 men’s soccer team.

Brendan M. Cavanaugh was named to the honor roll at Salisbury School for the spring term. He has also been named to the Who’s Who Among American High School Students for his scholar and athlete status at Salisbury School.
