REDDING – The Newtown 10-year-old All Stars reached the finals of the District 4 Tournament with a 6-1 win over Bethel.

Newtown appeared in the championship game on Tuesday night, after press time.

Bethel took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on an unearned run, but Newtown rallied back in the fourth inning by sending 11 men to the plate and scoring six runs. Tyler Edwards, Jeff Spencer, George Zaruba (RBI), and Ralph Sergiovanni (RBI) all singled while Jeff DiNicola (RBI), Keith McGrath (RBO) and Michael Coates were also issued walks in the initial stage of the rally. The second time around, Edwards rapped an RBI double.

Spencer and Michael Coates combined on a four-hitter while Zaruba, DiNicola, and Sergiovanni highlighted Newtown’s defense with tremendous plays in the field.

Newtown earned the right to play Bethel with a convincing 12-1 win over New Fairfield. The game was stopped after four innings because of the 10-run mercy rule.

Newtown opened the scoring in the first inning when Joe Fedak banged a bases-loaded double. DiNicola, Kyle Kromberg, and McGrath all scored after walking the bases loaded. Zaruba then drove in Fedak with the fourth run of the inning.

The All Stars scored another three runs in the second inning on a two-run double by McGrath – which scored DiNicola (walk) and Kromberg (single). McGrath came around to score on the play due to a throwing error.

Newtown followed up with three runs in the bottom of the third to take a 10-1 lead. Robbie Blanc singled, Edwards reached on a walk, and Fedak drove them both home with a shot to left center field. Sergiovanni hit a double to deep left center field, bringing home Fedak.

The game ended in the bottom of the fourth inning after a two-run homer by Edwards.

Fedak and Coates combined to hold New Fairfield to one run on one hit.
