Burglar Forcibly Enters Occupied House

At Night

By Andrew Gorosko

Police report an unusual nighttime residential burglary in Sandy Hook early on the morning of Sunday, June 26.

Several people were at home at the time of a forcible entry into a house on Pole Bridge Road, north of its intersection with Philo Curtis Road and Jeremiah Road. There were no injuries, police said.

At about 1 am, police received a call, reporting that residents of the house had heard a loud knocking sound at the rear door. Some of the several residents had been asleep at the time, police said.

A woman resident checked on what had happened and found that the home’s locked rear door had been forced open, police said. The woman, however, did not encounter the burglar or burglars.

Some of the residents believe they may have seen a person running across the property’s front yard after the incident, police said.

While inside the house, the burglar stole a briefcase from the kitchen table. The briefcase contained an undisclosed amount of money and some personal papers, police said. The incident may have been a targeted crime, police added. The victims were upset by the incident, police said.

The case is under investigation and police are pursuing leads in the probe.

Police ask anyone with information concerning the burglary to contact investigating Officer Scott Smith at the police station, telephone 203-426-5841, e-mail:  scott.smith@newtown-ct.gov.

Police urge residents to keep their homes’ doors and windows locked at night and when they are not home. Residents also should secure their vehicles and remove any valuables from them when they are unoccupied.
