July 4 Weekend—

State Police Urge Motorist Safety

State police will increase the number of troopers on highway patrol from Friday, July 2, through Monday, July 5, during the Independence Day holiday weekend.

The increased highway enforcement is known as Project CARE (Combined Accident Reduction Effort).

State police will staff sobriety checkpoints in areas where a high number of alcohol-related accidents occur. Radar speed-monitoring devices will be in use, according to state police spokesman Sergeant J, Paul Vance. State police aircraft will be used to monitor motorists’ behavior, he said.

State police urge motorists to wear their seatbelts and drive courteously.

During the July 4 weekend in 2003, state police made 3,445 motor vehicle arrests. Of that number 2,178 arrests were for speeding. Fifty-four of those arrests were for driving under the influence. State police investigated 213 motor vehicle accidents. There were two fatalities.

State police urge that motorists obey the speed limit. Also, they urge that motorists not drink alcohol and drive. Also, suspected drunk drivers should be immediately reported to police.
