Newtown Bombers Win Jimmy Fund Championship

The Newtown Bombers, 9-Year-Old All-Star baseball team captured the Al Leonard Jimmy Fund Baseball Tournament, hosted by Bethel Baseball Association, on June 25. The Bombers went undefeated to capture the prestigious tournament that featured 12 local teams.

In the championship game, under the lights on at Leonard field in Bethel, Newtown defeated a tough host Bethel team, 7-3. Bethel, which Newtown had faced before, came out of the loser’s bracket. The Bombers jumped out early with a first-inning run plated by Jack Miller, after a single from Jamey Hobar. The Bombers scored three more in the third to take a four run lead thanks, in part, to a towering double by Shane Demers that scored Tess Davenport. Newtown went to work again in the fourth after Bethel made it 4-2 in the top of the inning. Back-to-back singles by Kyle Roche and Luke Melillo, and a two-RBI double by Robert Murray helped Newtown build a 7-2 lead. Stellar pitching by Jack Miller, Kyle Roche, and tournament MVP Robert Murray, held the strong Bethel offense largely in check to capture the win and the tournament title.

Leading up to the Championship game, the Bombers reeled off four victories. The streak started when Newtown defeated a strong New Fairfield team 7-5, with multiple hit games from Nick Weiland, Tess Davenport, and Kyle Roche. The next win came at the expense of an overmatched New Canaan team. The Bombers put up 19 runs, fueled by James Heran, Josh Dunn, Jack Oltran, and Cole Demirjian.  The Bombers next had to face their in-town teammates from the Newtown Gold team. In a tough game the Bombers came out on top by a score of 9-2. Davenport anchored the pitching staff with a scoreless performance and Roche, Dunn and Hobar had multi-hit games.

The team is coached by Larry Miller, Pete Davenport and Head Coach Ken Roche.
