Senior services for Newtown seniors are available at the Multipurpose Building on Riverside Road in Sandy Hook. The Senior Center is under the auspices of the Commission on Aging. The center is run by Senior Services Director Marilyn Place. For more information about programs offered at the Senior Center call 270-4310.

You may drop in at the Senior Center weekdays between 9 am and 4 pm. A hot meal is served at noon for which you must reserve three days in advance.

Newtown has daily door-to-door minibus service Monday through Friday. Buses also run all day from the Senior Center to Sand Hill Plaza. On Fridays, the bus alternates between rides to Danbury Fair Mall and Berkshire Plaza in Danbury (to Walmart Route 6). Cost is 65¢ each way for the Sand Hill Plaza trip, 75¢ each way for out of town. Call 748-2511 TWO DAYS IN ADVANCE to book a ride and get the out-of-town Friday schedule.

This Week’s Programs

*Enjoy Tuesday, July 7, 1:30 to 2:30 pm with BOB MELL with songs such as “Summertime,” “Summer Wind,” and “Under the Boardwalk.”

*On Thursday, July 9, depart for Boston and lunch at Vinny T’s. After lunch cruise around the harbor and past the TALL SHIPS docked. After the cruise, browse around QUINCY MARKET. Depart 7 am; cost is $116.

Upcoming Programs

*SENIOR NUTRITION TRAVELING CHEF will be preparing Italian panini in the dining room on Thursday, July 16, at noon. Also included will be soup and ice cream. Reserve a seat for $4.50.

*Depart at 7 am on Tuesday, July 21, to Massachusetts to visit the MAGIC WINDS BUTTERFLY CONSERVATORY and see nearly 4,000 butterflies from all over the world, then lunch at the Delaney House, and after lunch enjoy a leisurely cruise on The Lady Bea between the Holyoke Dam and Northampton on the Connecticut River. Cost is $94.

*MOHEGAN SUN CASINO bus trip on Thursday, August 6, includes $15 food coupon or free buffet and three $5 bets. Cost is $30.

*Depart for Chicopee, Mass., and the HU KE LAU RESTAURANT and Dinner Theater and enjoy an all-you-can eat seafood buffet and a show featuring the Polynesian dancers on Tuesday, August 18. The first stop will be the Christmas Tree Shop. Cost is $93.

*HOLIDAY HILL PICNIC in Cheshire will be Monday, August 24, 9 am to 4 pm. Food galore, bocce, horseshoes, shuffleboard, bingo, mini golf, and heated pools. Free transportation from the center. The cost is $27.

*EDUCATING RITA will be performed by Richard Clark on Thursday, August 27, at 1 pm. This is the classic tale of a Cockney girl who looks for culture and finds herself along the way.

Day Trips

*The BOSTON POPS with JAMES TAYLOR at Tanglewood in Lee, Mass., on Sunday, August 30. Enjoy a luncheon at the Cork N’ Hearth complete with all the fixings. Reserve seats for the Boston Pops. Only a few tickets left. Depart 9 am; cost is $110.

Overnight Trips

*UPCOMING TRIPS: Las Vegas on October 26–30 at Flamingo Hilton or Harrah’s; Saratoga and the Lake George area on August 16–17; and an Atlantic Canada Cruise, September 7–12, Nova Scotia Cruise on The Carnival Triumph. More information can be obtained at the center.

*YOGA classes are Monday and Thursday at 10:30 am.

*Billiards room; poker/card room; ping pong; and Wii bowling, golf, tennis, and baseball.

*MAKE CARDS FOR OUR TROOPS every Tuesday from 10 am to noon and 1 to 3 pm.

*BEGINNERS BRIDGE LESSONS on Wednesday, 9:30 am, with Mary Matern.

*BOARD GAME DAY is every Thursday at 1 pm. Coffee or tea and snack will be supplied.

*MOVIE DAY on Tuesdays and Fridays at 2 pm. Enjoy a good “favorite” movie with a friend.

Menu For Week Of July 6–10

Monday: Roasted vegetable frittata, roasted potatoes, broccoli florets, corn bread, marble cake.

Tuesday: Oven friend chicken quarter, sweet potato fries with ketchup, chuck wagon blend, buttermilk biscuit, cranapple juice, apricot halves.

Wednesday: Beef rice soup with crackers, tuna salad boat on hot dog roll, coleslaw, pickle chips, chocolate pudding with whipped topping.

Thursday: Roast beef with gravy, mashed potato, fresh acorn squash, whole wheat bread, fresh fruit.

And for planning ahead—

Monday: July 13: Garlic parmesan encrusted cod with tartar sauce or chicken salad on wheat, tossed salad with tomato and French dressing, corn and peas, wheat dinner roll, diet fruited Jell-O with whipped topping.

Tuesday: July 14: Chicken cordon bleu, rice pilaf, French green beans, croissant, fruit and pudding parfait with topping.
