Midshipman Michael Messemer of Newtown has been named to the Superintendent’s list for the spring 2000 semester at the United States Naval Academy. Mr Messemer, a 1998 graduate of Newtown High School, has just returned from a summer assignment aboard the USS Wasp, LHD-1, in the Mediterranean. He participated in NATO exercises by accompanying Marines in mock assaults on the island of Sardinia and in Greece. His ports of call included Naples and Genoa, Italy, and Toulan, France.

Jill M. Swiatowicz of Botsford was named to the dean’s list for the spring semester at Roger Williams University.

Michael Christopher (Botsford), Monika Hajzer (Sandy Hook), Nancy J. Hollister (Newtown), Shauna Lee-Carmichael (Newtown), Marilyn Aylward (Newtown), and Richard Silloway (Newtown) all received degrees from Western Connecticut State University during recent commencement exercises.

Eric J. Vollmer, son of Bill and Janet Vollmer of Sandy Hook, has been selected as a winner of a Meserve Memorial Renewal Scholarship in the 2000 competition. He will receive a $2,500 award towards educational expenses at Keene State College. Mr Vollmer is a 1999 graduate of Newtown High School and is a sophomore majoring in environmental science.

Newtown residents Katherine Asselin, Keith Harrison, Pamela Alte, Matthew J. Abrams, Marco Arienzo, Monica Arienzo, Morgan Hopkins, and Jill Medinger were all named to the honor roll at Wooster School.

Newtown residents Shelly D. Alford, Melissa C. Baumer, Melissa F. Beard, Lisa Boff, Melissa D. Cyr, Fiona Fraser, Scott B. Kirmil, Shauna Lee-Carmichael, Sara E. Lovett, Ryan A. Mesinger, Rachel A. Riley, David J. Rosvally, Ted P. Selken, Catherine N. Siwik, Barbara M. Walbert, and Lloyd S. Williams were all placed on the dean’s list at Western Connecticut State University for the spring 2000 semester.

Sandy Hook residents Bethany L. Brown, Theresa D. Canale, Mark D. DeLoughy, Eugene C. Giorgio, Anthony J. Giovannone, Harris B. Towne, Cherish L. Valente, and Kristen M. Zepko were all named to the dean’s list at Western Connecticut State University for the spring 2000 semester.

Newtown residents Bernhard Klaus and William Speirs were placed on the dean’s list at Rensselaer University for the spring 2000 semester.

Kelly Lee Clark, of Newtown, and Lauren Ray Pelletreau and Kelly A. Sheehan, both of Sandy Hook, were placed on the spring 2000 dean’s list at the University of Delaware.

Adam Hopkins, son of Trevor and Irene Hopkins of Newtown and a freshman at Canterbury School, has been named to the honor roll for the fifth marking period of the 1999-2000 school year.

Nicolas Caruso, son of Patrick and Joanne Caruso of Sandy Hook and a freshman at Canterbury School, has been named to the honor roll for the fifth marking period of the 1999-2000 school year.

Allison Grant, daughter of Stephen and Susan Grant of Newtown and a junior at Canterbury School, has been named to the honor roll for the fifth marking period of the 1999-2000 school year.

Adam Winner of Newtown has been named to Syracuse University’s dean’s list for the spring 2000 semester. He is majoring in painting.

Stacy K. Purcell

Stacy K. Purcell, a journalism major at Northeastern University, received her bachelor of science degree during commencement ceremonies at Boston’s Fleet Center June 17. Stacy is the daughter of Kathy Paradise-Carroll and Philip Caroll of Newtown, and Jim and Pat Purcell of North Haven. Stacy is a 1995 graduate of Newtown High School and resides in Boston.

Sarah Elizabeth Doherty of Newtown, daughter of Mr and Mrs James H. Doherty, was placed on the dean’s honors list for outstanding academic achievement in the spring 2000 term at Gettysburg College.

Justin Alexander Riddle, residing at 4 Brassie Drive, has been awarded a Bachelor of Arts degree, with a major in Psychology, from Connecticut College.

Dr Louise McCullough, MD, PhD, of Newtown (Newtown High; UConn undergrad, graduate school, and medical school) has finished her residency in Neurology at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, MD.  She will begin a 2 year research and clinical fellowship in stroke at Johns Hopkins Hospital. At the ceremony, she was awarded the J. Slotnik Research Award for best original research for residents for her research with estrogen and its effect on preventing stroke and decreasing its negative effects.
