How We Met

To the Editor:

I was not able to get to the party for Mae Schmidle and Julia Wasserman, but I have a story to tell about how I met them.  We moved here in 1968.  The day after we moved in, I needed to get some groceries.  I went to the old A&P which used to be where CVS is now.  I was standing in the bread aisle looking at the bread when a voice behind me said “I like what you're wearing.”  I turned around and it was Mae.  Of course, I didn't know it then. I said I liked what she was wearing, too.  RED.

She said she used to work for Women's Wear Daily in Manhattan.  This was the first “famous person” I met in Newtown.  A couple days later, I decided it was time for a haircut. I went to Louis Salon of Beauty which was where Big Y is now.  I sat in a chair in the waiting area and next to me was the first chair with a customer in it.  The hairdresser was doing a woman's hair and a man was standing there talking to them.  As it turned out, it was Scudder Smith and Helen Smith. Two famous people in two days!  Fast forward to around 2000. We are antique dealers and we were doing the Newtown Historical Society antique show in the old town hall gymnasium.  A woman came into our booth and bought something. The next day, my husband delivered it to her house.  That was how I met Julia Wasserman!  I had heard of her good deeds but had never met her.

These two women are to be commended for all that they have done.  And I love The Newtown Bee!
