Dr Morris “Mo” Beers passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by family, at the age of 81, on February 10, 2021.

Dr Beers was born on December 22, 1939, in Newtown, to the late Irving and Elsie Beers. He was a faithful Episcopalian, having been a member at St Lukes in Brockport, N.Y., St Thomas in Brighton, N.Y., and St Phillips in Southport, N.C. He was also a member of the Southport and Brockport Rotary clubs, a former president of each.

Dr Beers graduated from Western Connecticut State University and earned his PhD in mathematics from the Peabody College of Education at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tenn. Although Dr Beers would go on to become a distinguished professor of education and win the Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching in 2005, he flunked out of college his first time around. He served one tour in the United States Navy, where he grew to love world travel. As fate would have it, he met the love of his life, Carol, during his second attempt at college. They fell in love, and over their 52-year union visited all seven continents and all 50 states together. They lived with their growing family in Japan, Brazil, Germany, and Indonesia.

Dr Beers will most be remembered for his warmth, generous spirit, and genuine love of people. He treasured being a teacher, and his legacy will live on in his students as well as his family.

Preceding him in death was his beloved wife, Carol.

Left to cherish his memory are his four children, Kathleen Mauro (Chris), David C. Beers (Sarah), Col. Eric Beers (Lisa), and Emily Kimmel (Kris); eight grandchildren, Nicholas, Hailey, Nathan, Lauren, Emily, Thomas, Miles, and Max; and one brother, David Beers (Judy).

A memorial will be held at Newtown Village Cemetery, 20 Elm Drive, Newtown, on Saturday, August 7, at 10 am.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you do a kind deed in Morris’s name to honor his eternal kindness and generosity.
