It has been a whirlwind championship season for Connecticut swimming, with many Newtown athletes turning in impressive performances.

Maricate Conlon (Makos) competed at YMCA National Championships at the University of Maryland July 25 through July 31 and finished 43rd out of 146 national qualifiers in the 200-meter backstroke. And at the Connecticut state championships held at Wesleyan University this weekend, she finished third in the 200 backstroke (2:34.23).

Also at the state championships, Anthony Fiore (Makos) swam best times in the 100 backstroke (ninth place, 1:08.77) and 200 backstroke (seventh, 2:30.70) while Matt Iassogna (Makos) made finals in the 50 butterfly (sixth place, 33.24) and 100 butterfly (fourth place, 1:15.48). Maggie Hemingway (Woodbridge Aquatics Club) reached the finals in the 50 free and 100 breaststroke, where she swam a personal best 1:22.30 to finish fifth.

Andrew Golankiewicz (11/12) and Alex Kron (11/12) represented the Ridgefield Aquatic Club and were standouts at states. Golankiewicz reached the finals in six events, finishing second in the 200 back (2:38.91), third in the 100 backstroke (1:13.26) and third in the 50 backstroke (36.15). Alex Kron also had five top 16 finishes at states, going seventh in the 50 back and ninth in the 100 back (1:15.83).

All of the above swimmers qualified for the CT Eastern Zone All Star Team. Golankiewicz and Kron will represent Connecticut at the Eastern Zone All Star Meet and compete in Buffalo, New York against top age group swimmers from 12 other states.

Meanwhile, the Wilton Y Wahoos swim team flooded the winner’s circle while capturing both the state and national YMCA titles last weekend.

The Wahoos dominated the states. When the water receded, the Wahoos had taken first with 3,078 points – more than 900 points ahead of the second-place team. The 10-and-under and 11-12 girls and boys swept their age groups while the 13-14 and 15-18 age groups accomplished many best times to contribute to the state victory, despite their ranks being depleted by those competing in the national meet.

The 13-14 boys captured second place as Newtown’s James Gaston took the second-place Distance High Point Award and the sixth-place Individual High Point Award. Gaston was fourth in the 800 freestyle and 200 butterfly (2:38.82), fifth in the 400 individual medley (5:20.09) and 200 Backstroke (2:29.72), and sixth in the 1,500 freestyle and 400 freestyle (4:40.89).

Brendan Deveney (13-14) placed 10th in the 100 backstroke (1:11.36), 11th in the 200 backstroke (2:32.15), 13th in the 200 freestyle (2:16.09) and 100 freestyle (1:02.62), and 15th in the 200 individual medley (2:36.96).

Both Gaston and Deveney contributed to the third-place 200 and 400 freestyle and 400 medley relays and the fourth-place 200 medley relay.

Connor Deveney (11-12) was ninth in the 200 backstroke (2:48.81), 11th in the 100 backstroke (1:19.88), and 15th in the 50 backstroke (38.01). Ryan Cahalane (11-12) captured 12th in the 200 butterfly (3:12.43), 13th in the 400 freestyle (5:14.47), 15th in the 200 freestyle (2:29.75), and 16th in the 100 butterfly (1:24.56).

Both Cahalane and Connor Deveney helped lead the 11-12 boys to a first-place finish in the 200 freestyle relay and third-place finish in the 400 medley relay.
