The Newtown Renegades baseball team saw its regional title hopes end at the hands of Exeter, N.H., in a 4-1 loss at Glander Field on August 6.

The Renegades had won their first two Cal Ripken 11U New England Regional Tournament games, including a thrilling 8-7 win over Exeter, before falling to New Milford and Exeter in the rematch, to get dropped from the double-elimination tourney.

Exeter and New Milford matched up in the championship round, with unbeaten New Milford needing only to win once to claim the title. Exeter, with a win over New Milford on August 7, would force a decisive, winner-take-all clash between the teams on Friday, August 8 (both games were set for 5 pm at Glander Field).

The Renegades also topped Keene, N.H., 5-3, winning their two games behind sixth-inning scoring rallies. The Newtown team had a strong season, which included a second-place state tourney outcome before hosting the eight-team regional tournament.

Joey Rios throws a pitch for the Renegades during New England Regional tourney action at Glander Field in early August. The Newtown team won its first two games before dropping the next two and was eliminated in a 4-1 setback to Exeter, N.H. on August 6.
