On Sunday, September 1, naturalist and author “Wildman” Steve Brill will lead his annual foraging tour at Sticks and Stones Farm, 201 Huntingtown Road.

The 60-acre stone masonry farm and retreat features a wide variety of habitats — a mountain, meadows, woods, cultivated areas, and fields, and wetlands — all loaded with their associated wild plants and mushrooms. Nuts are coming into season now, and participants will also be on the lookout for shagbark hickory nuts and white oak acorns, both delicious, and unavailable commercially.

The root season is also beginning. Attendees will be collecting surprisingly large wild carrots, common evening primrose roots, and burdock root, all exceptionally tasty and healthful.

Herbs and greens such as sassafras, lamb’s-quarters, mugwort, wood sorrel, and mullein will also be thriving.

This is also a great time for mushrooms, especially if there is been lots of rain beforehand.

The two hour walking tour begins at 2:30 pm. Cost is $25 for adults, $10 for ages 12 and under, payable the day of the hike.
