Green peppers and, to the right, radishes spilled from their bins at the booth of Daffodil Hill Farm on August 4.
Bright summer blooms are often offered, tied up in bouquets, by Jim and Sue Shortt at their farmers market booth.
A farmers market is a great place to find lettuce and tomatoes. It’s also a great place to find something a little unusual for the salad plate, like these Mexican sour gherkins found August 4 in the booth of Daffodil Hill Growers from Southbury.
Cider Mill Designs partners Kim Charles and Chris Rising search the region for unusual plants and containers, and then pair them up. Succulents and rare orchids made regular appearances in resulting offerings. The Farmers Market at Fairfield Hills, set up along the corner of DG Beers Boulevard and 1st Street, is presented Tuesdays from 2 to 6 pm. It will continue weekly until sometime in October, weather permitting.
Another Farmers Market at Fairfield Hills staple, Shortt’s Farm & Garden Center has been participating in the weekly offering since the market’s inception in 2003. The market — and Jim and Sue Shortt — began in the parking lot, and then the field, behind St John’s Church in Sandy Hook; moved for a few weeks to the side parking lot of the former Lexington Gardens in 2011; and relocated by mid-season 2011 to its current position at Fairfield Hills. On August 4, customers were finding plenty to select from at the Shortt’s tent including bouquets of fresh-cut flowers, corn on the cob, and lots of fruits and vegetables.
Regular participants of The Farmers Market at Fairfield Hills include Beldotti Bakeries. On August 4, employees Fernando Castano, on the left, and Giovanni Castano were offering up fresh-baked breads, cakes, rolls, mozzarella cheese and pesto. The Stamford-based bakery has been participating in the Newtown market for a few years.
For four hours each week, farmers market shoppers can take in some outdoor shopping at the Farmers Market at Fairfield Hills. Now in its 13th season, the Newtown event continues to offer fresh fruits and vegetables, baked goods, flowers, organic lemonade and iced tea, plants, jewelry, essential oils, and more. The Farmers Market at Fairfield Hills, set up along the corner of DG Beers Boulevard and 1st Street, is presented Tuesdays from 2 to 6 pm. It will continue weekly until sometime in October, weather permitting.
