Jacobi Cited For His Work In Acadia

Former Newtown resident Charles Jacobi, a National Park Service employee, has

been awarded the Director's Award for Natural Resource Management for his work

in Acadia National Park at Bar Harbor, Maine.

Mr Jacobi received the award at a dinner held recently in Long Branch, N.J. He

was cited for his work assessing and reducing problems on the park roads,

which are used by bikers, walkers, equestrians and joggers. The monitoring

techniques he developed allow use of a computer simulation model to assess

potential overuse of segments of the road system as well as determining how

many people are using the park system and where they are entering it.

He also was cited for a climbing management plan, the first in the park's

history, which he developed for technical climbers, and for other

accomplishments, including the development of interpretative signs for

sensitive natural areas, and the establishment of a program to protect and

monitor visitor use of the coastal islands.

The son of Mabel Jacobi of Beachwood Drive, Sandy Hook, and the late George

Jacobi, Charlie Jacobi is a graduate of Newtown High School, Class of 1971,

and of Middlebury College. He earned a master's degree in forestry at Virginia

Polytechnical Institute.

Touring The Bee

The Brownies of Troop 78 came to The Bee April 25 for a tour of the newspaper

offices. The girls learned about how The Bee is put together each week by

touring the editorial, typesetting, and production departments of the

newspaper. As usual, a highlight of the tour came when the girls each took a

turn through The Bee's revolving darkroom door. When the tour was over, they

gathered on the front steps for a photo and voiced their approval of the

experience. -Bee Photo, Bigham
