Four From Middle Gate Win `Reflections' Prizes
(with cuts)
BY MICHELE HOGAN
Newtown has a statewide winner, a third and two honorable mentions in the
Reflections Literature Contest -- all from Middle Gate School.
"I think this must be a first!" said Helene Ciarelli of the Middle Gate PTA.
Michael Miller's first place essay showed exceptional insight and sensitivity
into how the warmth of a caring family can change a person's life.
The fourth grader started his essay with "Around the world there are people
that don't have any family. They are old people, young people and children.
They do not have family to play with them, laugh with them, learn with them,
help them and love them. Wouldn't it be great if every one had a family?"
As state winner, Michael's literature will now go on to be judged at the
national level.
Mrs Ciarelli said that "we heard first about Michael, oh my gosh, then we
found out that there were three more! Out of eight kids we had four that
placed something! I don't think we have ever had anything like that!"
Rebecca Gellis came in third with her photo, "Wouldn't It Be Great If Dogs
Could Talk?"
Erik Bagger and Lauren McKinley received honorable mentions.
Erik's lively song had the intriguing title of "Wouldn't It Be Great If
Penguins Could Play Guitar?"
Lauren got a great snapshot of her little sister reaching up toward the sky,
which she entitled "Wouldn't It Be Great If I Could Touch the Stars?"
Middle Gate is thrilled with the students' success and proud of all the
students who entered the contest. Mrs Ciarelli said, "All the kids showed such
creativity, we are really proud of them all."
