Seniors Christopher Bassett and Lauren McEvoy have been selected to represent
Newtown High School at the Connecticut Association of Schools (CAS) second
annual recognition banquet scheduled for Tuesday, April 8, at the Aqua Turf
Club in Southington, Conn.
The CAS recognition dinner will honor Connecticut's outstanding high school
students who have been chosen for their demonstrated excellence in the
performing and/or visual arts, such as music, art, drama or dance.
The CAS award also recognizes qualities of leadership and scholarship as an
integral part of the selection criteria.
"This is like the Academy Awards for students of the arts," commented Newtown
High guidance teacher Gerri Waterbury, adding that she felt both Chris and
Lauren were excellent selections to represent Newtown.
Chris has been a member of the Newtown High School Band and was an All-State
selection as a saxophone player. He has been studying music composition with
Director of Yale Bands, professor Thomas Duffy, during his senior mentorship
project, and he hopes to major in music at college and possibly go on to
become a composer.
Lauren has been an Advance Placement honors art student at Newtown with a
concentration in advertising design. She hopes to continue her art studies and
major in graphic design. For her senior mentorship project, she designed a
corporate logo.
Both students are members of the National Honor Society.
The CAS banquet, which will feature a keynote speaker and dinner for the CAS
award-winning students and their families, is sponsored by the Westfield
Corporation, a leading international shopping center developer with 52
regional centers across the United States and Australia.
Westfield's four Connecticut malls include Enfield Square, Meriden Square,
Connecticut Post Mall and Trumbull Shopping Park.
