New Policy Snuffs Out Smoking At Schools
BY MICHELE HOGAN
The Newtown Board of Education is reviewing a proposed revision to school
rules regarding smoking. If passed next month, smoking will be prohibited on
any school property at any time.
The proposed revision says: "The Board of Education recognizes the health
consequences of tobacco use and the reports from various medical sources
identifying health hazards for tobacco users/smokers and nonsmokers. It is the
desire of the board to provide a safe and healthful environment for students
and adults who use school premises.
"The Board of Education prohibits smoking and the use of tobacco products
including cigarettes, cigars, pipe tobacco, chewing tobacco or snuff at any
time, by anyone in school buildings, on school property, or on transportation
provided by the Board of Education."
The current practice allows smoking outside of school buildings after 4 pm
daily, and on the weekends. The new ruling includes all school premises
(including sports fields and parking lots) at all times.
John Reed, Superintendent of Schools, expressed concern that the no-smoking
rule, although common among many school districts, may be difficult for
smokers in adult education, smokers considering returning to school after a
length of time away from school, and bus drivers who smoke.
For adult education, Dr Reed suggested that five minutes longer for class
breaks would allow smokers to go for a drive off school premises to have a
cigarette.
Dr Reed is hoping that adults take a "team approach" to prevent smoking at
school games and other events.
