Fifth Graders' DARE Graduation
(with photos)
Twenty-eight fifth graders from St Rose School received their diplomas last
week for successfully completing the Newtown Police Department's DARE program.
This was the seventh class from St Rose to go through the 17-week course. DARE
stands for Drug Abuse Resistance Education, a program designed to train
students to avoid substance abuse, resist peer pressure and avoid using
violence as a way to settle disagreements.
Once a week, DARE instructor Lt Robert Tvardzik, visited the parochial school
to talk to the students about the dangers of drug and alcohol abuse. He would
then join them for lunch and recess. As a final assignment, the students,
based on what they had learned, had to write an essay on how they would take a
stand to resist drugs, violence and alcohol.
Newtown police also teach the DARE program to fifth grade students at Head O'
Meadow, Hawley, Sandy Hook and Middle Gate elementary schools.
