Ed Ink: A Day Of Discovery
Three hundred and thirty Newtown kids went to school last Saturday, bringing
their parents with them. No, it wasn't for a sporting event, and it wasn't a
mass detention. The crowd of kids and adults had been drawn by science.
The Discovery Science Workshops, sponsored by the Junior Women's Club for the
past seven years, has steadily increased its scope and popularity over the
years. The event has grown from 11 workshops the first year to 33 workshops
this year, and every year the imagination, innovation, and sheer fun of the
various experiments, demonstrations, and exhibits has surged to a new level.
The idea behind the Discovery Science Workshops is to bring parents and
children together in the spirit of scientific inquiry in a way that is both
engaging and instructive. And in workshop after workshop, both kids and adults
discovered that, contrary to what young people may otherwise think on a long
Saturday in February, the world is not boring. Whether it is viewed through a
telescope, a microscope, or that most powerful of optical devices, the mind's
eye, the world and its universe have some amazing stories to tell.
This annual celebration of science education not only brings together parents
and children, it has forged an alliance between local businesses, which
support the program, and the schools, which contribute teachers and
facilities. The success of this annual event is drawing notice from groups in
other towns. The club has already helped a club in New York City set up a
similar program, and Danbury has shown some interest in following suit.
We congratulate the Junior Women's Club not only for realizing such a good
idea, but for sticking with it through the years.
