Eastern Bluebird Facts
Eastern Bluebirds are small members of the thrush family
They are the only bluebird species found in New England
A male has a bright blue back, and reddish-brown breast, sides and flanks; the
underparts are white.
A female is similar in color to a male, although paler than males.
Juveniles are grayish with brown and white spots on the back and breast; only
the wings and tail show any blue.
Adults are six to eight inches tall and have a squat appearance when perched.
They prefer orchards, meadows and similar areas with scattered trees and short
groundcover.
They eat insects and spiders during spring and summer; wild fruits and berries
in fall and winter.
Nests are made of mostly grass, but can contain fine rootlets, pine needles or
deer hair.
They lay three to seven eggs that are oval and light blue in color and produce
two broods a year, three if conditions are favorable.
They are becoming more common year-round in certain areas of Connecticut.
