Selectmen Approve Road Plan For Riverview Complex
BY STEVE BIGHAM
The Board of Selectmen Monday approved a road work agreement for a proposed
housing complex on Washbrook Road in the Botsford area.
The approval comes two weeks after selectmen requested that the developer, R&G
Riverview LLC, create a second access road into the 49-unit affordable housing
development for safety reasons. They were concerned that emergency vehicles
might be unable to reach the area if the main road was ever to become blocked.
The selectmen suggested extending an unused portion of Washbrook Road out to
nearby Cold Spring Road.
Several residents of the area showed up at the selectmen's meeting to oppose
this plan. They said they don't have a problem with the building proposal.
Their beef stems from the access road that would intersect with Cold Spring
Road near Middle Gate School, creating increased traffic. They presented the
board with a petition signed by residents seeking to have the unused portion
of Washbrook Road changed to another name, saying it can be confusing for
visitors trying to find a house. The selectmen agreed to change the name at a
later date and voted to put up gates on either end of the accessway, to be
used only in an emergency.
However, residents were concerned that the gates would someday come down once
other parcels in the area were developed. The board said it could not
guarantee that the gates would stay up forever, forcing selectman Gary Fetzer
to vote against the idea.
According to Town Engineer Ron Bolmer, a 15-foot-wide, gravel road would cost
about $167,000 to construct, which would include the upgrade of a 950-foot
section of road from Route 25 to the development.
