Man Pleads Guilty In Muder Of Newtown Man
MILFORD (AP) -- A Derby man has pleaded guilty to felony murder in the 1996
stabbing death of a Newtown man at a boat ramp.
Gary Morgan, 20, entered his plea April 30 under the Alford doctrine, which
means he does not admit guilt but acknowledges that prosecutors have enough
evidence to convict him.
Police said Morgan slit 19-year-old Shawn Doheny's throat during an argument
over a stereo in August 1996. The stabbing took place at a Housatonic River
boat ramp in Shelton.
Morgan's public defender, David Egan, said his client does not admit killing
Doheny but admits helping steal the stereo.
Morgan was declared mentally competent to stand trial in February. Twice last
year, psychologists found him incompetent to stand trial.
While in jail, Morgan had attempted suicide by trying to strangle himself with
a sock.
He is scheduled to be sentenced June 11 in Milford Superior Court.
