BYFIELD, MASS. -- The Olde Byfield Expo Center was the site of an antiques

sale of 519 lots and 275 bidders resulted in a gross of $159,000, according to

Michael Bider.

Fetching the highest bid of $4,000, a pair of Spanish polychromed carved ivory

religious figures standing 5« inches high went to a phone bidder in New York.

An L. & J.G. Stickley chair reached $3,750, selling to a dealer; a small

Satsuma bowl measuring approximately five inches across reached $3,200; an

1835 double pedestal English card table in oak sold at $900; an ornate

Victorian mahogany bookcase with rope turned vertical corners and double glass

doors was purchased at $2,400; and a Korean bulbous vase with a dragon

decoration, 11« inches high, with blue and white coloring, achieved $3,500.

An Italian Old Master painting, late Seventeenth or early Eighteenth Century,

depicting a saint and an angel brought $1,300; an Eighteenth Century map of

North America signed "Matthew Suetter," 18 by 14 inches, realized $1,050; a

1775 commission document signed by John Hancock as President of the

Continental Congress crossed the block at $3,250; and a 1690 document signed

by Governor Bradstreet, a will and deed, went for $1,400.

An Art Nouveau custom-made library table/writing desk, in cherry or applewood,

possibly by Davenport, reached $2,400; a cranberry Victorian epergne was

purchased at $1,050; a mahogany Victorian parlor table with a revolving

bookcase below achieved $1,400; and African and Oceanic artifacts ranged from

an affordable $35 to a high of $900.

A mysterious and intriguing voodoo stick was undervalued, selling at $900,

Bider noted. The lot, made of silver and wood, featured three figures on its

crown, a priestess flanked by a zombie on each side, beneath which was a chain

and a large cut amethyst embedded in silver at the middle of the pole, and

ending in a full figured black slave.
