Hearing Set On Small Cities Block Grant Proposal

The Board of Selectmen will conduct a public hearing at 7 pm Monday, February

23, to discuss a proposal to file an application for a Small Cities Community

Block Grant, which is used for housing rehabilitation and for handicapped

accommodations at Edmond Town Hall.

The hearing will be in the Multipurpose Center on Riverside Road in Sandy

Hook.

Elizabeth Stocker, director of the town's Office of Community Development,

said the proposed application will request grant funds to continue the Housing

Rehabilitation Program, which helps low- and moderate-income residents fix

their homes. It also will request funds to upgrade town buildings for handicap

accessibility to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

The public is invited to attend the hearing to comment on the proposal for the

use of Small Cities funds and to discuss community development and housing

needs for low- and moderate-income persons. Written communications also are

welcome and should be addressed to the Office of the First Selectman, Edmond

Town Hall, 45 Main Street, Newtown 06470.

"The primary objective of the Small Cities Program is the development of

viable communities by providing decent housing and suitable living

environments and expanding economic opportunities for low- and moderate-income

people," Ms Stocker said. "Seventy percent of funds must principally benefit

those people of low and moderate income."

Last year, Newtown received $300,000 to replace the pump station at Nunnawauk

Meadows, to rehabilitate homes, and to administer the program.

Copies of the application for the 1998 Small Cities Program and the

Consolidated Plan for Housing and Community Development Action Plan 1997 are

available for review in the Community Development Office in Edmond Town Hall.
