Ambulance Corps Reports That '97 Was Another Busy Year
BY STEE BIGHAM
The Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps responded to 1,210 calls in 1997,
down 28 calls from its record-breaking year in 1996.
Of those calls, the corps reports 208 were due to auto accidents, 254 were
from non-vehicular trauma, 665 were for medical calls and the rest were a
combination of emotional problems or standby calls. The ambulance corps took
in a total of 1,329 patients, 958 of them Newtown residents.
Danbury Hospital was the destination for 828 calls, while the rest went to St
Vincent's Hospital in Bridgeport, Waterbury Hospital, Yale-New Haven and
Griffin Hospital in Derby.
According to corps members, the building boom in town has caused an increase
in the number of ambulance calls.
Last year, the corps consisted of 44 volunteers, but the number has risen to
54. However, that number is still only about a dozen more than 20 years ago,
when the ambulance responded to approximately 500 calls per year.
Debbie Aubin once again led the corps in responses, volunteering her services
at 272 calls. John Basso was second, responding to 229 calls, while Maria
Sadler, 186, Kevin Clyne, 172, and Joe Farrell, 158, rounded out the top five.
This past year, there were 141 multiple calls, meaning a second call went out
when an ambulance was already on the road. There were also 34 triple calls.
The corps is always looking for new members, who must be 21 or older. No
experience is required since the corps will provide all the training.
Anyone interested in joining may call the town dispatch office at 270-4200 and
leave a message for John Basso, the corps chief.
