Wine Wisdom: No Intimidation, Just The Facts

By Steve Small

One of the world's oldest stereotypes is the wine snob. Generations of

potential wine enthusiasts have been intimidated into ignoring wine because

they "did not know anything about it." Thankfully, today wine is more accepted

as simply another beverage. If you are still a little bit intimidated by wine,

please read on. As good old Sargent Friday proclaimed, today's column will

give you "just the facts."

As you begin to enjoy wine, your palate will gradually favor dry wines. Most

fine wines are dry. The most popular dry white wines today are Chardonnay,

Sauvignon Blanc, and Pinot Grigio. Most white wines are served chilled. White

wines generally go well with white sauces, chicken and fish.

The most popular red wines today are Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Chianti.

Red wines are usually served at room temperature or around 60 degrees. Red

wines go well with red sauces and red meat. White Zinfandel is an enormously

popular pink wine or rose. It should be served chilled and is an excellent

aperitif wine.

If you are ordering wine in a restaurant, I would suggest ordering wines that

are one step above the house brands and least expensive wines. Expect to pay

more for a wine in a restaurant than you would in a retail shop. Do not order

the most expensive wine on a restaurant wine list unless you know that wine is

the specific wine you must have.

The subject of wine has mystified many people for many years. Foreign wine

names, hard to decipher labels, and imperious restaurant sommeliers have

helped keep the subject of wine somewhat confusing. Just remember that a good

bottle of wine is any wine you like. By tasting different wines, you will also

learn about wine. You will then be a wine "expert" and you can help spread the

word about what an enjoyable beverage wine can be.
