Ban On Trucks On Mile Hill Road To Be Repealed
A public hearing on a proposed repeal of an old ordinance that prohibits
commercial truck traffic on Mile Hill Road South and Nunnewauk Road will be
next Wednesday at 7:45 pm in Newtown Middle School auditorium.
Because the town has no authority to prohibit traffic through state property,
an attorney's recommendation was that the ordinance be killed, according to
Pierre Rochman, Ordinance Committee chairman.
Newtown police do not currently enforce the ordinance.
Mr Rochman said the traffic ordinance, which was first enacted in 1981, was to
be killed this past summer along with several others that had outlived their
usefulness, but somehow was left out.
Among the ordinances repealed in July was one that prohibited auto racing in
Newtown and a civil defense ordinance, adopted during World War II, which
dealt with safeguarding the town during an enemy air raid.
