A Hat Trick In Hartford For The Piano Man
(head & cutline only)
Before embarking on a tour of Europe this summer, where he will perform most
dates with Elton John, Billy Joel returned to Connecticut last week for three
performances at the Hartford Civic Center. Tickets for the May 6, 8 and 9
shows sold out in less than 30 minutes when they were each put on sale back in
February. Because he doesn't have a new album to support this tour, Joel is
concentration on playing songs from his library of hits, some of which date
back nearly 30 years. The result is a two-hour show that is enjoyable for all
ages. Even the most elementary of fans know the opening chords to "Piano Man,"
Joel's nickname and his signature song, which he is performing on the current
leg of his tour in his encore, along with the song "Captain Jack." Long before
he reaches the encore stage of the show, The Piano Man has gone back and forth
from ballads to rockers, old songs and new, including "You Oughta Know By
Now," "Allentown," "Pressure," "Don't Ask Me Why," "My Life," and a million
others. The above photo is from Joel's May 6 performance. It was announced
this week that the performer will be returning to Connecticut for a fourth and
final show this year at the Civic Center this fall. Tickets for a September 9
concert will be on sale Saturday, May 16. -Bee Photo, Hicks
