Two New Web Sites Aimed At The Consumer
Two new web sites dedicated to the consumer have made their debut on the World
Wide Web.
Consumer information from various federal agencies has been consolidated at
www.consumer.gov , and Consumer Reports has launched its new web site at
www.ConsumerReports.org.
The federal site, called U.S. Consumer Gateway, claims to be the first
Internet site to provide "one-stop" access to federal consumer information.
The site allows visitors to search for information by subject rather than by
federal agency.
Each of the site's ten major categories, including Food, Health, Your Money,
Product Safety, and Transportation, has its own subject areas, allowing
consumers to locate and link to appropriate and late-breaking information
quickly and easily. Topics are cross-linked to encourage and enhance access to
the consumer information.
Among the site features at U.S. Consumer Gateway is "Scam Alert!" which
provides information about current law enforcement efforts and tips on how to
recognize -- and avoid -- fraudulent and deceptive practices in the
marketplace.
The federal site combines the efforts of the Consumer Product Safety
Commission, the Food and Drug Administration, the National Highway Traffic
Safety Administration, and the Securities and Exchange Commission.
Consumer Reports Online, the new web site from Consumer Reports magazine, is
an ad-free, easy-to-use site that offers product and service ratings developed
by the consumer testing organization.
The site offers two levels of access. Visitors can get consumer advice for
free, and paid site subscribers can receive product service ratings and
recommendations.
For no charge, visitors to Consumer Reports Online can get timely advice on
how to buy products and services, safety alerts, information on product
recalls, a directory of links to consumer agencies, and a section that helps
consumers locate manufacturers.
Those willing to pay $2.95 per month or $24 per year will have access to the
latest issue of Consumer Reports magazine; 24 months of test results,
including detailed ratings and recommendations of products and services;
exclusive product reliability reports based on extensive surveys; and the
opportunity to participate in message board discussions with Consumer Reports
experts.
