Town's Emergency Services Get Free Hazardous Materials Software
Newtown this week received $1,700 worth of new computer software that will
help emergency services personnel provide a fast response to chemical spills
and other emergencies.
The CAMEO (Computer Aided Management of Emergency Operations) software was
provided at no cost to the town by the National Safety Council through its
CAMEO Industry/Government Partnership Program. It includes a database with
emergency response and safety information on more than 4,700 hazardous
chemicals, plus computerized map overlays used to determine where evacuations
may be needed.
"The software provides computer-aided management of emergency operations,"
said William Halstead, chief of Sandy Hook Volunteer Fire and Rescue Company
and a deputy fire marshal.
The software will be installed in a computer in the Sandy Hook rescue truck
and in computers in the office of the Newtown Health District, the fire
marshal and the emergency dispatch center at Edmond Town Hall.
Mr Halstead said the software enables emergency personnel to plot atmospheric
conditions, wind speed and other variables onto maps which will show how a
chemical spill or explosion could endanger a surrounding area and require an
evacuation.
In 1988 the town received a grant which was used for earlier versions of the
CAMEO system.
"It was much slower," Chief Halstead said. "This new system is very
comprehensive."
The firefighters also were able to purchase new computers for the rescue truck
and the fire marshal this fiscal year after bids came in much lower than
anticipated for a new generator.
"The Board of Fire Commissioners allowed us to use the money that was left
from the purchase of the generator for the computers," Chief Halstead said.
He said that some firefighters already are trained to use the CAMEO system and
others will be offered training through the Sandy Hook fire company.
"We intend to offer the training and invite all of the fire companies to
participate," he said.
