Sips & Swallows From Around The Wine World

By Steve Small

Prices for 1996 Bordeaux have exploded to all-time highs. Bordeaux has always

been one of the world's most collectible, well aging and prestigious red

wines. With wine auctions becoming legal in the US over the last couple of

years, many of the world's premier wines are both beverages to enjoy and

investments.

As long as the economy remains strong, prices for the finest Burgundy,

Bordeaux, Vintage Ports and California Cabernets should continue to soar.

The October 1997 issue of Consumer Reports features eight pages devoted to

wine. Included in the report are tasting notes, shopping tips and wine

recommendations. The article offers good common sense information on some of

the most generally available wines.

However, if you need the "best" wines as picked by Consumer Reports , you may

be out of luck. The article created such a run on the wines they may now be

out of stock at your favorite wine shop. If you have to have only "the best,"

you may be drinking Dr Pepper for awhile.

The rest of us can be assured that by consulting with a wine-knowledgeable

friend or retailer, we can still drink some excellent wines that are close to

Consumer Reports ' "best" in both taste and price.

I have had the enjoyable job of tasting quite a few wines over the last month

or so. I am happy to report there are literally hundreds of very good wines

available in Connecticut in all price ranges. Over the past ten years, the

number of delicious fine wines available in Connecticut has grown and grown.

While some prestigious "name" wines are getting harder to find, very good

wines in the $8 to $20 price range are more plentiful than ever. These wines

will provide pleasure to even the most discriminating drinkers.

Just a reminder that when I speak about various beers, wines and spirits,

moderation is always assumed. We can all enjoy alcohol without enjoying it to

excess.
