Young European explorers converged on Sandy Hook School last week, learning
about their counterparts who sailed the ocean blue centuries ago.
The explorers, who double as students in Cathy Mazzariello's fifth grade
class, recently completed their research projects on the men from the Old
World who set out in search of the New.
Last Thursday was Explorer's Day and students brought in their projects to
share with the class. Students drew posters, built model ships and kept
diaries, travel brochures and timelines on the adventures of their explorers.
Each student was also assigned to compose a ballad on their explorer.
MorganEve Swain wrote and sang a rap song on the life of legendary Viking,
Eric the Red, who traveled the North Atlantic in search of unchartered land.
Her brother, Spencer, on the guitar, provided the background music.
Patrick Dalton's song on Ferdinand Magellan to the tune of "Zorro" received a
boost from dad's background voice and mom on the piano.
"Instead of the Partridge Family, we had the Dalton Family," Mrs Mazzariello
joked.
Students also brought in snacks related to their explorer's country or the
country which was explored. Students plundered the tasty pot-luck buffet the
way Norsemen plundered the coasts of Europe during the 8th, 9th and 10th
centuries.
"We love to eat in fifth grade," Mrs Mazzariello pointed out.
In addition to learning about the men and women who risked falling off the
edge of the Earth to discover another corner of the world, the fifth graders
acquired various research and note taking skills during the project.
