Eli Terry Clock At Lincoln
(W/4 Cuts) - EWM
ORANGE, N.J. -- Furnishings and accessories from several New Jersey estates,
including two portraits of Abraham Lincoln, an array of clocks and a six-carat
diamond bracelet, drew attention at Lincoln Galleries' April 7-8 auction.
A Spanish highly carved dower chest sold for $770 and an inlaid bottle cabinet
on frame brought $935. A mahogany mullioned hanging corner cabinet reached
$1,700 after fierce bidding.
The highlight of the furniture session was an elaborately inlaid tall-case
clock, with a painted eagle on the box, attributed to Eli Terry. It aroused
considerable interest on exhibition day and was thoroughly examined by many
dealers. On the first day of bidding, it was hammered down at $12,000 to a
telephone bidder after spirited bidding from the floor.
Later in the day, two unframed portraits of Abraham Lincoln, without a beard,
sold for $3,300 each, and an eight by nine inch oil painting, "Fly Fishing,"
signed by J. Pollard, reached $3,900. An ornate gilt frame, 56 by 45 inches,
sold for $2,400.
On Wednesday, a William Grant banjo clock sold for $1,400, and a Seventeenth
Century John Samon lantern clock sold for $1,000. An Eli & Samuel Terry shelf
clock sold for $1,650, and a Bartholomew shelf clock reached $1,200.
A collection of polychromed carved santos were knocked down for $500 to $700
each, an Oriental ivory carving of an elder with a staff was sold for $1,100,
a small d'ore bronze angel tow-branch candelabra went for $3,000, and a bronze
putti and shell-decorated lamp brought $2,500.
The jewelry session included a platinum and diamond bracelet, with
approximately six carats of diamonds, that sold for $4,100 and a 14-karat
white gold and diamond necklace, also with an estimated six carats of
diamonds, that sold for $4,400. A platinum and diamond ring, with a 12 mm
South Sea pearl, was hammered down at $3,500.
The highlight of the book collection was Observations on the Theory and
Practice of Landscape Gardening by H. Repton, 1803, which, after fierce
bidding, was hammered down at $2,600.
