Call For Entries: SCAN's Spring Show
(with cut)
BY SHANNON HICKS
The Society of Creative Arts of Newtown, Inc., will present its 28th Annual
Spring Show and Sale in Newtown's library from May 9 to May 17. The annual
show is open for entries from all artists, whether members or non-members.
Artwork will be accepted in oil, watercolor, pastel, acrylic, sculpture or
graphics (no computer graphics). Receiving times will be Thursday, May 7,
between 3 and 7 pm. Artists may enter one or two pieces of their original
work. A non-refundable entry fee of $10 for members, or $15 for non-members,
will be charged for each work.
Size limits are 42 inches in any direction, including the frame, for
paintings. The works must also be ready for hanging with screw eyes and wire.
For sculpture, there is a maximum of 50 pounds allowed, and 36 inches in any
direction. Artists must provide their own pedestal/stand for sculpture for it
to be included in the show.
Additionally, all works will be available for sale. Prices will include the
frame. Each work of art must have been recently executed, and not previously
shown at any other SCAN show. SCAN will keep 20 percent of the purchase price
from all sales.
The works will remain on display at the library through the entire duration of
the show. Pick-up will be Sunday, May 17, between 3:30-4:30 pm only. No works
will be allowed to leave before that time. (Rejected works may be picked up
any Saturday or Sunday during show hours.)
Carol Reilley, a SCAN member and practicing artist, is the chairman of this
year's show. She is being assisted by co-chair Pat Thompson.
The art will be judged by a panel of three jurors. This year's Jury of Awards
is Ann Gibb, PSA, of Darien; Joan Heston of Stamford; and Rainie Crawford,
PSA, of New Milford. The Jury of Selection is Betty Christensen (AWS), Anita
Gregorski, Ruth Newquist (NWS) and Mrs Reilley.
SCAN will bestow prizes for Best in Show ($300), first place in watercolor
($150), first in pastel ($150), first in oil/acrylics ($150), and first in
graphics ($150). Cash awards donated by area businesses will also be made,
with prizes in all categories. Artists will not be eligible to win more than
one of the major prizes.
The show is moving to a new location this year. Previously presented for two
days at the Newtown Meeting House, where the society holds its twice-monthly
meetings, the spring show is moving two doors up, to the C.H. Booth Library at
25 Main Street in Newtown.
It was Mrs Reilley's decision to move the show to the library. As show
chairman, she was given the freedom to tailor the show as she saw fit.
"Moving into this new space will give us better publicity," Mrs Reilley feels.
"Just as the town of Newtown is expanding, SCAN is also expanding in parallel
to the town and we are attracting more artists. This move affords us the
opportunity for a longer show.
"It's all to improve the shows," she continued.
The duration of the show has also been extended. Held in the past over just
one weekend, this year the society will be able to present its spring event
for ten days, including two full weekends.
Show hours are Saturday, May 9, 10 am-5 pm; Sunday, May 10, 1-5 pm; Monday
through Thursday, May 11-14, 10 am-8 pm; Friday, May 15, 12-5 pm; Saturday,
May 16, 10 amd-5 pm; and Sunday, May 17, 1-3:30 pm.
Events During The Show
An awards ceremony and opening reception for the spring show is planned for
Saturday, May 9. A reception for all participating artists and the public at
large will be held at the library from 2-5 pm. The presentation of awards will
take place at 3 pm. There will be refreshments, and admission is free.
On Saturday, May 16, members of SCAN will participate in a "Paintout" on Main
Street in Newtown. Artists will be setting up their easels around 10 am. Mrs
Reilley hopes to have artists set up all along Newtown's historic Main Street.
"The Paintout is definitely in an effort to better position our shows and
communicate them effectively to the public," explained Mrs Reilley. "We have a
really nice core group of community supporters who come out to every show, but
because there are so many new people in town now we wanted to be advertising,
if you will, even more effectively."
Mrs Reilley, and the membership of SCAN, is hoping that by setting up easels
along the road surrounding the library, members of the public will stop to
visit with the artists. After seeing works in progress, the hope is that the
public will then be interested in viewing the full show inside the library
building.
"When people see painters painting out in the fresh air, it will draw so many
people, I think, and make their interest come alive for the show," said the
chairman.
Artists who wish to participate in the 28th SCAN Spring Show should contact
Ruth Newquist for an application form. Mrs Newquist can be reached at
426-6654. Receiving for the show will be Thursday, May 7, from 3-7 pm.
