Winter Concerts Brighten January Nights
B Y D OROTHY E VANS
The holidays may be officially over but the melodies linger on.
Several long winter nights were considerably brightened during the past two
weeks, as families and friends of Newtown's youngest musicians attended a
series of concerts held at local elementary schools.
The bands, choruses and orchestras of Sandy Hook, Hawley, Head O' Meadow
School and Middle Gate performed a variety of pieces, from "Merrily We Roll
Along" by the Head O' Meadow string ensemble, to a rock band rendition of
"Fidgets," as the musicians donned their shades and played soulful saxophones.
Several Middle School musical nights were offered as well, and there were so
many instrumentalists and singers that performances had to be scheduled on
three separate evenings. A chorus concert was held Monday, January 13, a
winter band concert Wednesday, January 15, and an orchestra concert Thursday,
January 16. These events all took place in the Newtown High School auditorium.
