The Gift Of The Samurai
(with cut)
Newtown resident Michael Luzzi and senior instructor George Chaber of Karate
America in Bethel created plays with karate students that upheld the values of
giving at Christmas.
The first play, called Gift of the Samurai, was a take-off from the play Gift
of the Magi. In the play, a poor man gives up his prize possession of a
samurai sword that had been in his family for generations in order to give a
beautiful gift to his wife on Christmas.
The second play, Snow Wars, starred none other than Darth Vader, who as a
renegade elf tries to take over the North Pole from Santa Claus, only to be
defeated and welcomed back by Jolly St Nick.
The night ended with everyone, including the audience, singing a round of
"Jingle Bells" led on guitar by Ryan McGough and Nick Luzzi.
Students who participated came from all the surrounding towns including
Bethel, Newtown, Redding and Danbury. Students rehearsed for two months and
performed for an audience of over 200.
