High School Student Faces Weapons Charge
A Newtown youth appeared in Danbury Superior Court on Tuesday, September 23,
after being charged with carrying a dangerous weapon. The court proceedings
have been continued until Friday, October 24.
Pieter Lott allegedly pulled out a stun gun in the Newtown High School
cafeteria Monday, September 15. The weapon was activated, but not discharged.
Newtown High School Principal Bill Manfredonia said, "If someone breaks the
law, we will call the police. I have zero tolerance for anyone breaking the
law."
Mr Manfredonia said that Peiter Lott is "out on a suspension now." Early next
week, administrators will decide if the suspension should be prolonged or what
other action should be taken.
The high school principal noted that "this is out-of-the-ordinary for this
student." He also said that "this is definitely an isolated incident. I have
never heard of a stun gun in a local school" until now.
Youth Officer George Sinko of the Newtown Police Force said [infractions
involving teenagers] "goes on more than people hear about. They don't get
caught all the time."
Officer Sinko reflected on teenage infractions and said that "peer pressure is
a strong influence. It's not that [students] always mean to use it. Some might
think it's cool and want to show it to friends."
