BIDDERS ENJOY A NIGHT AT SONNEYS
By Rita Easton
WATERFORD, N.Y. -- Sonney Doin of Sonney's Auction Barn hosted a crowd of 275
at his January 26 auction. The 340 lots were sold for a gross of approximately
$22,000.
The contents of an Esperance, N.Y., antiques shop were the subject of the
sale. Bargain hunters were out in numbers, and an oak side by side, which sold
to a private buyer, drew the highest bid of $1,200.
Several of the buys of the day included: a three-foot-high jardiniere
decorated with flowers in yellow and orange, with only the word "China"
inscribed on the underside, which sold for $750 to a Maryland buyer; a
nine-piece walnut dining room set, described by Doin as "run of the mill,"
which garnered $875; and a mahogany three-piece bedroom suite, which also took
$875.
An undistinguished piano stool sold at $120 (surprising even Doin, who
commented, "That'll never happen again"); a four-drawer tiger maple dresser
with wooden knobs fetched $650; and a tiger maple corner cupboard, with two
panelled doors above two panelled cupboard doors, achieved $600.
Quilts ranged from $50 to $175; a small marbletop coffee table on a walnut
base was purchased at $475; and an oak hall rack with lift seat went out at
$575.
Prices quoted do not reflect the 10 percent premium.
