COUNCIL PROFILES JACK ROSENTHAL

Democrat Jack Rosenthal is seeking his third term on the Legislative Council

from District 2. He believes his 40 years of public service in Newtown give

him a perspective that others dont' have.

He ran his own insurance business in Newtown from 1955-1975, and was elected

to several terms as a member of the Board of Selectmen before being elected

first selectman in 1975 - a post he held until 1987.

Mr Rosenthal also served on the council's governmental antecedent, the Board

of Finance from 1963-75, and was twice chairman of the Democratic Town

Committee.

Mr Rosenthal notes that as a member of the Democratic minority on the council,

he is often out-voted, but he believes his knowledge of the town helps frame

the discussions for other council members and offers insights that are useful

to the town's budgetmaking board. "I try not to talk too much. I've found over

the years that listening is a wonderful attribute.

Of the coming capital projects faced by the town, Mr Rosenthal favors

continued funding of road projects, and he supports the school renovation and

expansion proposals advocated by the Board of Education, which his son, Herb

Rosenthal chairs.

Mr Rosenthal supported the campaign to improve and expand the Booth Library,

and he believes Town Hall South also has to be renovated. "I don't think Town

Hall South has had a paint brush on the side of it in the last eight years. We

have to maintain it; we just can't let the building fall down."

He thinks Newtown will benefit from his continued public service, and, he

says, "I'm one of the nicest guys you ever want to meet."
