Newtown Prepares For Its Favorite Parade
The Labor Day Parade, a Newtown tradition since 1962, will step off at 10 am
Monday with more than 100 marching units celebrating the theme "Newtown - Our
Town."
The parade will follow its usual route from the top of Main Street near the
Ambulance Garage down Main Street past the flagpole to Glover Avenue, up
Glover, left onto Queen Street, ending at Church Hill Road.
Ginny Lathrop, founder and director of the Lathrop School of Dance, will be
this year's grand marshal. The parade judges will be Sally Allison, Kathy
Berg, Bill Colbert, Bob Gleason, Jean Muraszkin and Ed O'Malley.
The reviewing stand will be on Queen Street between Fleet Bank and the former
post office building.
Weather permitting, Re/Max will offer tethered hot air balloon rides at the
Ram Pasture beginning at 8 am. Balloonist Chris Mooney will be assisted by the
members of the Explorer Post 70. Tickets are $5 for adults, $3 for children.
All proceeds will benefit the Children's Miracle Network.
WRKI (I-95 FM) radio will be broadcasting live from a van near the flagpole.
The Rotary Club will be selling hot dogs and other food from their stand on
Queen Street. The club also provides a community service by renting portable
toilets which will be strategically located around the parade route for the
use of the public.
The parade is sponsored by the Newtown Summer Festival. The parade committee
includes Kym Stendahl, who has been the chairman for six years, and Lisa
Franze, Sharon Aguila, Valerie Giarratano and Lynn Kuhn.
The parade costs about $15,000 to stage each year, of which $10,000 is needed
for the transportation and related expenses of the marching bands and
performing units. The rest is used for trophies, prizes, printing, postage,
insurance and other expenses. So far the committee has raised about $13,000
and still needs the seed money to begin the preparations for next year's
parade.
Donations may be sent to Newtown Summer Festival, c/o Fleet Bank, 6 Queen
Street, Newtown 06470.
