Ukrainian Festival Marks Its 20th Year

More than 500 people made their way to the Paproski Tree Farm on Hattertown
Road Sunday for the annual Ukrainian Church Festival.
This is the 20th year that Olga Paproski has held the event on her 42-acre
farm and the festival was filled with religious ceremonies, ethnic food
(including Olga's delicious stuffed cabbage) and plenty of dance and song.
"Everybody had a great time. The weather was nice, not too hot, so everybody
had a big appetite," laughed Mrs Paproski.
The Newtown resident was born in Youngstown, Ohio, but moved back to the
Ukraine at the age of four. She grew up there, then moved back to the United
States in 1938, just before the war. The Ukraine, the "bread basket" of the
former Soviet Union, remains in her blood.
Back in the 1970s, the festival began as just a small get-together with family
and church friends. It's grown ever since and the public is always welcome.
This year's festival had special significance because it marked the sixth
anniversary of the Ukraine's independence from the Soviet Union, to the day.
The day began with the celebration at 11 am of the Divine Liturgy, officiated
by the Rev Father Stepan Yanowski. That was followed by a program of Ukrainian
poems and song, with the highlight being a performance by the Veselka dance
group.
Many of those who flock to the event are members of the Holy Protection
Ukrainian Catholic Church in Bridgeport, which sponsors the festival. The
church has been hesitant about holding the event in the Park City, which is
known for its high crime. Plus, on the Paproski farm, children are treated to
hay rides by Stephen Paproski and the beautiful music of the 54-string
bandura, the oldest Ukrainian instrument.
The festival also helped spotlight the medical relief efforts going on in
Chernobyl, the Ukrainian city that was decimated by the nuclear disaster more
than ten years ago.
