Junior Expelled From NHS Following Stun Gun Incident
A Newtown High School junior has been expelled from Newtown High School for
the remainder of this semester following an incident in the Newtown High
School cafeteria on Monday, September 15, where a stun gun was allegedly
activated but not fired.
The grounds for the expulsion are "endangering the welfare of another student"
according to John Reed, Superintendent of Schools, who was at the expulsion
hearing held by the Board of Education last Friday. Also at the hearing were
the student, his parents, NHS principal Bill Manfredonia, and Jules Triber,
assistant principal.
The junior, Pieter Lott, will be expelled for the remainder of this semester,
but Mr Manfredonia retains the right to reinstate him in school at the end of
this marking period, Friday, November 7, if merited.
Criteria for reinstatement are the successful start of 50 hours of restitution
work, favorable reports by tutors provided by the Board of Education, and
evidence the student will not pose a threat to any student.
Typically there are one or two expulsions per year from local schools, most
frequently for some action endangering the safety of another student.
