The Genealogy Club of Newtown will hold its next meeting on Wednesday, September 8, at 7 pm, via Zoom.

The program will explore “Putting Things in Their Place: Paying it Forward in the Digital Age.” The guest speaker will be professional genealogist and lecturer Michael Cassara.

For anyone who has ever found an old photograph, scrapbook, or family keepsake from someone else’s family and wondered how to track down a descendant, Cassara’s talk will explores the many fascinating ways in which people are doing just that. Using digital resources, online family trees, and more, people have, in recent years, been able to preserve priceless family history items and expand the “universal” family archive.

Cassara, who is based in New York City, specializes in Italian/Sicilian genealogy and genealogical technology. He has frequently presented at regional societies as well as national conferences, including numerous talks at RootsTech, FGS, the APG PMC, the New York State Family History Conference, Ohio Genealogical Society Conference, and many more.

Cassara holds a certificate in genealogical research from Boston University and is a graduate of the ProGen Study Group.

He currently serves as president of the Italian Genealogical Group (italiangen.org) and blogs about his research at digiroots.net.

The Genealogy Club will continue to meet via Zoom until further notice. Meetings are co-sponsored by the C.H. Booth Library.

All are welcome to join the presentation. E-mail requests to genclubnewtownct.secretary@gmail.com by September 6 and include name, address, phone number and preferred e-mail address. A program link will be sent in response on September 7 or 8.

Those planning to attend are asked to join the meeting at 6:45 so they can be admitted to the room before the meeting begins promptly at 7 pm.

The club year runs from September through June; dues are payable in September and October. A single membership is $20, or $30 for a family membership. E-mail the club secretary at the address above if you are interested in becoming a member.

Michael Cassara, a professional genealogist and lecturer based in New York City, will open the new season of programs for the Genealogy Club of Newtown on September 8.
