The 1997 release, which had a feature film based on the same story in movie theatres this summer, dramatically depicts the October 1991 Halloween Nor’easter that took place in New England and caused millions of dollars in disaster damage. A major element of the weather system that led to the formation of that “perfect storm” was the remains of Hurricane Grace. According to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), Hurricane Season 2000 began on June 1 and continues through November 1.

The Perfect Storm focuses on the tale of a doomed ship, the Andrea Gale, a Gloucester, Mass., fishing boat that was caught in the middle of what some meteorologists have called the storm of the century. At the heart of the story is a gripping narrative about struggling for survival in a tempest of ferocious winds and 100-foot waves.

Rookie author Sebastian Junger did more than simply spin a good yarn with The Perfect Storm. His account of how fishermen plied their trade and lead their lives in the early 1990s is fascinating. The same goes for his descriptions of storm formation, wave physics, and the terror of drowning. Mr Junger’s work has been positively compared to the writing style of Jon Krakauer.

A number of copies of The Perfect Storm are available to borrow at the library. Those who wish to participate in the book discussion do not have to have read the entire book in order to attend the program.

The library is at 25 Main Street in Newtown, and the book discussion will be held in the third floor Special Collections room. For additional information, contact the library at 426-4533.
