âOLYMPIC GOLDâ OPENS SEPT. 28 AT FORBES GALLERIES IN NYC, 2 CUTS
AVV/GS SET 9/5
NEW YORK CITY â âOlympic Gold,â presented by the National Jewelry Institute, in cooperation with the United States Olympic Committee (USOC), will be on view at The Forbes Galleries September 28âDecember 31.
The exhibition will then travel to the Field Museum in Chicago to open next spring. The National Jewelry Institute, a nonprofit organization, is the first jewelry institute in America founded with the mission of preserving and educating the public about fine jewelry as art objects.
âOlympic Goldâ will count down to the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing with a showcase of gold medals from Olympic and Paralympic athletes. It will trace the story of American athleticism and offer spectators a view of the journey an athlete takes while representing his or her country at the Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Not only will the gold medals of the athletes be displayed, but the exhibition will include personal objects that have helped make these athletes gold medal winners. For example, the display for Shannon Miller, the most decorated United States gymnast, will display not only her gold medals but also her baby booties that had a bar attached to correct the pigeon-toed condition with which she was born. For Eric Berguost, the exhibit includes the titanium plate he now wears around his neck â it was inserted in his collarbone after a skiing accident prior to his winning gold in 1998.
The Forbes Galleries is at 62 Fifth Avenue, at 12th Street. For gallery information, 212-206-5549.
