B.W. LEADER PAINTING TO LEAD MARTIN & SONS SALE SEPT 29 w/3 cuts

avv/gs set 9/6 #711538

MORRISONVILLE, N.Y. — On September 29, Martin & Sons Inc will conduct an auction at its gallery featuring art collectibles, country smalls and antique furniture.

The highlight of the auction is expected to be a Benjamin Williams Leader oil on canvas that was discovered partially hidden behind boxes in a storage area in the home of a prominent family from the Adirondack area.

The painting measures 23½ inches high by 35½ inches wide and is titled “Evening on the Lledr.” The work is signed “B.W. Leader 1887.”

The painting depicts a man exiting a small boat and two children standing on the riverbank. Trees are reflected in the water and billowing clouds with pink streaks suggest a peaceful summer dusk along the river valley.

Another significant painting that was consigned by the same family, is an oil on canvas signed “A. Windmaier 1874.” This painting measures 18½ by 31 inches and has a small tear. It depicts a village with snow covered roofs. A woman is washing laundry in a hole cut in the ice. Nearby are two children and a dog walking on the ice.

Other highlights in the auction include a painting on molten glass by Edris Eckhardt, two flintlock pistols, a stamp collection, several antique quilts, numerous yellowware bowls, an antique sled decorated with roses. Also included are country smalls, painted furniture and a Chippendale slant front desk.
