Senior services for Newtown seniors are available at the Multipurpose Building on Riverside Road in Sandy Hook. The Senior Center is under the auspices of the Commission on Aging. The center is run by Senior Services Director Marilyn Place. For information about programs offered, call 203-270-4310.

You may drop in at the Senior Center weekdays between 9 am and 4 pm. A hot meal is served at noon, for which you must reserve three days in advance.

Newtown has daily door-to-door minibus service Monday through Friday. Buses also run all day from the Senior Center to Sand Hill Plaza. On Fridays, the bus alternates between rides to Danbury Fair Mall and Berkshire Plaza in Danbury (to Walmart Route 6). Cost is $1 each way for the Sand Hill Plaza trip. Call 203-748-2511 TWO DAYS IN ADVANCE to book a ride and get the out-of-town Friday schedule.

 

This Week’s Programs

*Special Note: Looking for donations of yarn and material for the upcoming Holiday Bazaar.

*Work on crafts for the holiday bazaar on Tuesdays from 10:30 to 11:30 and 2 to 3 pm.

*Learn the waltz, fox trot, tango, swing, cha cha, rumba, mambo, and merengue starting Wednesday, September 12 at 1 pm. No partners needed; this is line dancing.

*Rock ‘n’ Roll with Elvis at Villa Bianca on Wednesday, September 12. An all-you-can-eat family-style luncheon will be served, along with a complimentary drink. Cost is $29.95. The van seats 16 or car pool. Depart at 10:30 am.

*Polynesian and Hawaiian dance lessons with Jasmin will be on Thursday, September 13, from 3 to 4 pm. Learn the basic movements to rhythmic South Seas Island music through ancient and modern dances. Call center at 203-270-4310 to sign up.

*Bingo sponsored by Danbury Healthcare on Thursday, September 13, at 1 pm.

*AARP Refresher Safe Driving Course on Friday, September 14, from 12:30 to 4:30 pm. Cost is $12 for AARP members and $14 for nonmembers. Call to reserve seat; class is limited to 20.

*“Where Silver is Golden,” an open house on Saturday, September 15, 11 am to 2 pm to meet and greet members of the Commission on Aging, many handouts, and refreshments.

*Country & Western line dancing has been canceled until further notice.

Upcoming Programs

*Come cheer on your favorite horse in the race on Wednesday, September 26, at 1 pm.

*Flu shots are available every Tuesday in October from 9 am to noon. Proof of insurance must be presented. No appointment necessary.

*Bingo will be September 19, October 17 and 31 at 1 pm.

*Bakers Wanted! A bake sale will be on the third Monday of the month from 9 to 10 am. Bring donations of baked goods in before that time.

Day Trips

*Travel to the Catskill Mountains in upstate New York and visit the world’s largest kaleidoscope, shop at unique country stores, lunch at the Sportman’s Alamo Cantina, and visit the Stucki Embroidery Works on Thursday, September 20. Cost is $ 86; departure time is 8:30 am.

*The Sicilian Tenors will take you on a romantic journey from Hollywood to Broadway to Italy at the Grand Oak Villa in Oakville, on Friday, September 21. A family-style luncheon will be served. Cost is $58; depart at 10:30 am. The van seats 16 or car pool.

*The Royal Manor in Garfield, N.J., is hosting a traditional Bavarian-style festival party, “Ocktoberfest ist Wunderbar,” on Thursday, October 4. Sauerbraten and roast chicken will be served family style. Two complimentary drinks during happy hour and great entertainment provided. Depart at 9:15 am; cost is $86.

*Upcoming Trips: Tour Italy: Sorrento, Naples/Pompeii, the Isle of Capri, and more on October 11–19; King Neptune’s USO Show in Virginia Beach on October 14–18; and Bermuda with Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines on the Explorer of the Seas on October 28–November 4. Monday: 10 am, pinochle; 10:30 am, exercise; noon, lunch; 1 pm, chorus/sing-along; 1:30 pm, art class. 2 pm yoga.

Tuesday: 10 am, Cards For Troops; 10 am, pinochle; noon, lunch; 2 pm, tai chi; 3 pm, chair yoga.

Wednesday: 10 am, pinochle; 10:30 am, exercise; noon, lunch; 1 pm line dance/ballroom dancing; 2:15 pm, Bridges.

Thursday: 10:30 am Iris fold cards; noon, lunch; 1 pm, Scrabble; 1 pm, yoga; 1:30 Wii bowling; 3 pm Polynesian/Hawaiian dance lessons.

Friday: 9 am, Zumba Gold and mah jongg; 10:30 am, exercise or quilting or sewing; noon, knit or crochet; 3 pm, chair yoga.

Other items available at any time are: Wii (bowling, tennis, baseball, golf), pool table, ping pong table, card table, and various board games.

 

Menu For Week

Of  September 10–13

Monday: Tomato basil soup, broccoli quiche, fresh zucchini, roasted potato, dinner roll, fresh fruit.

Tuesday: Lasagna with meat sauce, broccoli, cauliflower, Italian bread, apple juice, diet fruited Jell-O with whipped topping.

Wednesday: Oven fried chicken, macaroni and cheese, green beans, biscuit, fruit cocktail.

Thursday: Roast beef with gravy, baked potato, sour cream, Scandinavian blend veggies, wheat bread, pie.

And for planning ahead —

Monday, September 17: Salisbury steak, gravy, bowtie noodles, squash, whole what bread, peaches.

Tuesday, September 18: Teriyaki chicken, brown rice, Oriental blend veggies, oat bread, mandarin oranges.
