Catherine Elaine Mummery, 82, of Newtown, passed away Saturday evening, September 4, surrounded by family who loved her dearly, with her daughter Diane, and son Robert, right by her side. She was assisted gracefully into heaven by the amazing people at Regional Hospice of Western Connecticut in Danbury.

Cathy was born on May 17, 1939, in Bridgeport, Conn., to Elaine Dorothea Miller (Kruy) and Albert Joseph Miller. She attended Stratford High School then went on to graduate high school, proudly, during her adult years. Cathy went on to become a hairdresser, and from the early 1960s worked nearly 20 years at the Paradise Salon of Beauty in Stratford. She was passionate about her work, often telling stories of her clients and the styles that she perfected. She went on to marry John Soltis, raising two children, Robert and Diane, while living in Bridgeport. Cathy subsequently moved to Collinsville (Canton), and married Stephen W. Mummery, originally from Brooklyn, N.Y. Cathy and Stephen traveled together and shared a love for music and crossword puzzles. Cathy also worked at Hamilton Standard Corp, in Farmington, where she met her best friend, Eileen Shea. Cathy and Eileen were always laughing and telling stories, and mom simply “came to life” when they were together. She also enjoyed countless visits and phone calls with her beloved sister, Sandra Miller, of Stratford, who stood by mother during the final weeks of her life.

Cathy was always full of life and full of love for all, especially her animals. She loved and shared her life with her many cats, her three dogs, Corky, Spencer, and Claude, and even her fish! She single-handedly built her own koi pond and fountain in her backyard, which was gorgeous! We weren’t surprised, as mom always had a way of figuring things out. Mom included her animals in everything — they were her loving companions, especially after Stephen passed, and while living briefly in Woodstock, Georgia. Cathy came back to Connecticut, eventually settling in Newtown, enjoying a peaceful life alongside her beloved cat, Mechew, who will miss her dearly. She enjoyed gardening and tending to her many plants, and simply loved watching the birds and squirrels playfully feeding outside her window. We will always remember her smiles, her laughter, and her story-telling during our family visits and holiday dinners. Cathy had a keen propensity for dates — she could remember anything! She loved music from the ’50s, classic movies, and the Hallmark Channel! Most of all, she loved her family and her animals — she (and we), needed nothing more.

Cathy is survived by her loving children, Robert Soltis, of Newtown, and Diane Printz, of Waterbury; daughter-in-law, Jo-Ann Soltis; son-in-law, Kevin Printz; and her six loving grandchildren, Connor Printz (21), Landon Printz (17), Grace Soltis (16), Gabrielle Soltis (14), and twins Jack and Eli Soltis (9). She is also survived by her sister, Sandra Miller of Stratford, and her niece and nephew, Tammy Olayos and Christopher Olayos.

Catherine was predeceased by her husband, Stephen Mummery of Collinsville; her mother, Elaine Miller (Kruy); and father, Albert Miller.

We will miss you dearly, mother (and granny), especially your constant love, your honest advice, and your joy for the simple things in life. Now you are at rest and at peace, and your suffering is over. We are sure that you are on a long walk with your dogs in heaven, and you will be forever in our hearts!

The family will be holding a private celebration of life gathering later this month at the Soltis residence in Newtown.

In lieu of flowers, please make any donations to the American Lung Association, lung.org, or to the Newtown Animal Shelter, 21 Old Farm Road, Newtown CT 06470.

Honan Funeral Home, 58 Main Street, Newtown is serving the family.
